Using Users For Updates

Tele Atlas, a leader in digital mapping, is asking its users to provides updates and identify mistakes (via Techdirt). I agree with this model, it is especially effective in scenarios where the data is deep and widespread. No better source than someone already geographically distributed and who suffers or gains by your application. Previously users have been used for testing, or even providing data like traffic information. In my opinion, this model – of using users for updating information – will be effective. The challenge will be to motivate them to relay back this information. It might involve providing convenient ways of doing so, without steep learning curves. The next challenge – once they start updating – verifying the credibility of information. However I don’t see these as impediments, they can be solved to get maximum benefit from this model.
