I agree with you that a theme should allow for personal preferences. That is why the theme is completely bare, in the sense, that it does not include any pre-installed widgets or plugins. I'm not a fan of navigation links at the bottom, where they are often overlooked. I'd take almost everything you have in the sidebar now and move it down below, and move the navigation up.
