Drupal is seeking support, and have created the Drupal Association. It is an organization to help the open source project. If you look at the list of responsibilities mentioned, it does not include Drupal development, but everything else supporting it. Like infrastructure, promotion and fund raising. I think this is great, since the community development around Drupal will continue as it is. Dries Buytaert presents his explanation.
I think this can help a lot. Drupal is one of the most well written CMSs that creates standards compliant and accessible code. The underlying reason is because it gives granular control over data retrieval, processing and display to the developer through a well designed framework.
I hope that the Drupal Association helps, by complimenting the community development.
