Indian Railway Goes Mobile

If this is any indication of the mobile adoption in India, the Indian railway has gone mobile. A while back the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had launched online booking, which was heaven compared to the crowd and sweat at the booking counter.

I think the Indian Railways have really made it handy for the common man. Mobiles are more popular, accessible and convenient in India and are being experimented with. The booking application is a GPRS application in Java, so it will not work with the minimalist phone today. There is an interactive voice interface and SMS for booking the tickets, but the GPRS interface can offer more usability. However, it is quite evident that the minimalist par for a mobile is constantly rising towards using it as a computer. It is more practical and probable that the common man will use Internet through mobiles than through personal computers and broadband. The Indian Railways is going in the right direction, I hope others, especially the Government organizations realize this and follow.
