If you have any doubts about the state of Linux in India, this should help you. BOSS Linux, is a localized Linux distribution that packages Indianized applications like BarateeyaOO. A bigger news is that this is supported by the government. It includes packages useful for documentation, but also some interesting applications like feed readers.
Why this attempt seems to be full-fledged is because the distribution has also made it easier for installation. Installation CDs, along with LiveCDs are available, but it can also use the easiest installation of Linux to download and install it.
I think it is great. Localization is the only way to take the computer closer to the common man. There is just one more thing NRCFOSS and C-DAC, the people behind BOSS, should do – make BOSS even more easily available. The common man should be able to get it from the post office or libraries or book stalls or even from the railway stations and bus depots. If the government leads, others will follow. Adoption of Linux can reduce Windows piracy, good for Microsoft, or is it!
