One of the axioms for any web site today is Content is King. Content is the primary factor which determines value of the web site. In the Web 2.0 era, we have transcended from the whole web site terminology to more human oriented ones, like communities and social media. The realization that contribution to a web site can be two way has revolutionized the Web. Content is created not only by the authors by also by the ones who update or comment or discuss, the participants.
However, how many times have we thought about leveraging the participants’ content. Subconsciously I visit a lot of web sites because I feel there is value not only in the original content, but also in the discussions and the comments. But as a reader I have no way of trying to read more comments by someone. As a commenter, is there any way to build my profile and credibility on basis of my participation elsewhere? As a site owner, is there a way to highlight the participants’ content and truly do justice to the content?
Well, there are answers to these questions, but none of them answer all of them. There are various comment tracking tools and community building services, but none of them provide a allround value to everyone involved. CommentPower seems to have a solution.
CommentPower is a social media service that can provide the missing angle. By registering with CommentPower site owners can allow:
- Readers to rate the contribution
- Commenters to build their credibility, reputation and profile at the CommentPower Web Portal via history of all the participation.
- Site owner or the reader to highlight good contribution.
This can encourage activity in the community and increase quality of contribution. This blog currently is one of the testing grounds for CommentPower which is currently in beta. It provides a plugin for Wordpress for the ones who want to get involved. Jitendra Gupta, the brain behind this idea, has informed that plugins and widgets for more platforms are coming soon. On this blog you will see the CommentPower plugin working in the comments section. CommentPower identifies you through your email ID, so it is important that you use a single email ID to keep the same profile. An interesting thought currently in my mind is integration of CommentPower and OpenID, but it is just a thought currently.
It is important to note that CommentPower is not only about comments, it is about contribution. Comments are one of the popular contribution ways, but there are also forums and bulletin boards. That is the reason they are going to rebrand as SezWho. According to Jitendra, they are still getting the branding design done.
What do you think about this idea? You can register with CommentPower and use their service. You can keep uptodate with them through their recently started blog. Or you can just comment here.

Abhijit, Great piece…Yeah..We are looking to make social media more useful by providing a mechanism to filter signal from the noise and by rewarding contributions.
Thanks, Jitendra
