So, Dell is offering Ubuntu 7.04 or Feisty Fawn in response to the most popular request from their users. There will be many questions. Why Ubuntu? On which machines? What about support? What about upgrades? What about K/X/Edubuntu? The cost? But there are some interesting things to look out for
- The hardware combination that Dell chooses to install Linux on
- Whether this becomes a gateway for Linux to enter the common man’s life
- Whether the common man acknowledges and accepts the open source.
If we go by the numbers, this might prove to be a big test case for open source. Even if not accepted it can probably highlight problems in acceptance of open source by the average Joe, giving us important feedback. Interesting times.
