OS Market Share

Marius Oiaga’s piece on how Vista is scoring over Mac OS X and Linux got slashdotted. This should be expected, since Vista is the natural upgrade for the majority on Windows, and is offered by many manufacturers as default, which might change. Popularity of an OS is affected by two factors - marketing and education. Apple has improved on marketing and education, and Linux is slowly improving on education. Marketing is what has sold so many Vista copies yet, and education is perhaps making XP an unexpected competitor for Vista. I think more education later, others will add to the competitors, unless there is education that Vista really helps.

Everything that I've learned about computers at MIT I have boiled down into three principles: Unix: You think it won't work, but if you find the right wizard, he can make it work. Macintosh: You think it will work, but it won't. PC/Windows: You think it won't work, and it won't.
