The Ones From Hollywood Earn More

The Robert Half Technology’s 2008 Salary Guide survey says .Net and Java will earn more and LAMP and the likes will suffer.

IT employment specialist Robert Half Technology’s 2008 Salary Guide found application and senior web developers versed in Java and Microsoft’s languages can add another 10 to 12 per cent on top of the salary range for developers. Those skilled in LAMP and AJAX can add around five per cent.

Anything new here? Not necessarily, the software industry keeps feeding the Hollywood languages. Are they always technically better and suitable? No, they are always popular. Matt Assay says this indicates that the enterprises are still driven by them. True, but there is little point in hovering over the technologies for enterprises, the real benefit is in the solutions you can get or build to solve your problems. And for that we need to look at the ROI which is difficult. It is easier to reduce the effort and time to make decisions by continuing with the popular ones.

The report didn’t say .Net/Java developers would earn more – it said their increases would be higher. Now, 10% of 50k is not the same as 10% of 100k. I think you may be right, in the end, however, my observations have been that LAMP pays less. Also, niche languages pay more, but jobs are harder to find.
