More thought on lessons from Levine, I do think the tailor is a genius. Not a genius tailor, but a genius marketer. If you re-read the story from a marketer’s perspective, it highlights his remarkable ability to convince the customer that the suit indeed fits him.
I think this is what happens most of the times in the software industry, rather in other industries which want to adopt softwares. There are problems, they want solutions, so they speak to marketers who convince them how suitable their product is. Like Levine, a lot of marketers in the software industry can convince the customer about their software, even if it involves modifying the problem itself to suit their solution.
But I do not think it is a problem with the marketers, it is their job. It is a problem with the customers who get completely vulnerable when it comes to software. One reason might be that it is difficult to visualize the result of using a software, as a lot of things have to be done right. Instead of adopting the software and customizing it for themselves, they end up adapting themselves and their processes as per the software, even if it cripples them.
