Munir Umrani notes that the Telegraph is going to make OpenID mainstream by becoming a provider.
The Telegraph will soon become the first newspaper in the world, and the first British media company, to become an OpenID provider. Readers will be able to begin using the service from the end of February.
This is also one of the rare instances where the mainstream media sees value in one of the open standards, and I hope others do too. This, along with the recent support, is going to bring OpenID into the limelight for sure. This will help make the average newspaper reader aware of it. Unfortunately that is where it will stop. We cannot push OpenID to the people unless there are widely used services which accept it. I hope newspapers would do this as well.
