Bespin – Web Based Framework For Code Editing

Bespin, a web based code editing framework, is the newest experiment from Mozilla labs. Currently at 0.1, the initial prototype framework includes a lot of common code editing features – like syntax highlight and import/exporting projects. The proposed set of features are quite exhaustive, and it could very well become an editor of choice for many. I will look forward to the Ubiquity interface and their aim to have high quality vi and emacs mode.

I would like some more features in it, like VCS integration and some documentation utilities.

I am excited about this for other reasons. I think this can be effectively used:

  • through mobiles and likes
  • on code-hosting sites like sourceforge
  • for code reviews
  • within CMSs
  • in schools

Knowing that it is coming from Mozilla, the plugin API will be something to watch out for. No wonder, Bespin is being referred to as a framework more than an editor.
