Recession Might Make This The Year Of Linux Desktop

The recession might bring an accelerated adoption of Linux, IDC survey says (pdf). Of course, as Andy Updegrove says, this is something good coming out of the bad times. I expected to see results like these to come out during economic downturns, because even today cost is seen as the biggest factor in favour of Linux.

Although, I hope that cost is not the only reason why Linux gets adopted. It is a benefit only if Linux can give you either an equivalent or a better system to work with. It will be a grand failure if Linux is tried as a free Windows clone. I think it is time for the Linux community to come together and educate how Linux can be beneficial by being different from Windows. After all, the recession can finally make this the year of Linux desktop!
