Customized setups are productive. I customize almost every tool I use to extract maximum productivity and efficiency. Naturally, I have come to dislike tools that do not allow me to do my thing and offer only the standard setups. And it all works great for me. However my solutions do not work for most of the common problems out there. And the reason hit me like a rock while reading Steve Wozniak’s interview:
… I’m also a fan with sticking with the most standard software that millions of other users also use, because you get the benefit of all those other users’ problems and solutions.
While I might always be able to create my own solutions, not being able to see other users’ problems is a big blow. Especially when I am in the business of developing solutions for others.
It has been a good thing to realize this. Though this will not make me leave my customized setups, I will respect the standard setups more, and make conscious efforts to keep up with them.
